#Voting: Goldman, Marks Join on Firehouse Lawsuit, First 12 Pages #VA04
VOTING RIGHTS. 💼 Attorney Paul Goldman and #VA04 candidate Tavorise Marks have joined for a lawsuit against the process that created today’s firehouse primary. They argue that thousands of voters were disenfranchised by the decisions that led up to today’s firehouse primary.
Many predict that today’s Democratic nominating contest will finally elect Virginia’s first Black woman to Congress, which is likely why so many have gone silent on the issue of voting rights — an issue many Democrats have worked on. But current state law in Virginia leaves a wide open door to voter suppression as it pertains to special elections. To date, no legislator, Democrat or Republican in Virginia, is planning to offer legislation to fix the problem. The Virginia General Assembly convenes on Jan. 11, 2023. What results is a rushed 7-day congressional “firehouse” primary for Virginia’s 4th congressional district election involving 8 polling locations in a universe of over 200,000 registered voters normally requiring 223 polling locations.
LAWSUIT. Now, one of today’s candidates, Chesterfield NAACP member Tavorise Marks, and others are joining a federal lawsuit. “I will always put the people before myself and fight for you! If there is anyone who wants to vote today and can’t due to distance, transportation, etc., and you are interested in joining me in this lawsuit - please reach out to me',” wrote Marks on twitter.
