After Assassination in MN: Democrats Call for End to Violence, Republicans Mostly Silent
Youngkin's Trumpian Call for National Guard Against #NoKingsDay,
Trump Ego Parade May Get Heavy Rain
Assassination in Minnesota Spurs Even Greater Outrage on No Kings Day. Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Don Scott and Virginia Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell issued statements this morning after the shocking news that Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and State Representative Melissa Hortman were shot in their homes by a gunman who, according to local officials, was impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced the death of Rep. Hortman, who was 55, at a press conference shortly after the news broke. Gov. Walz also announced that her husband was deceased.
The targeted shootings occur on the same day as a planned $48 million military parade in Washington, DC on President Trump’s birthday to allegedly honor the U.S. Army.
The assassinations and attempted murders also take place after a series of altercations involving federal law enforcement with Democratic lawmakers. The latest was yesterday after U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) was pushed around and then thrown to the ground and arrested by federal officers after asking a question during a press conference by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Since Trump started his second term in office in January 2025, he has embraced aggressive over-policing, unconstitutional use of the military and other authoritarian tactics. A push to silence critics and use official government offices to put out false information has been constant. A building culture of intimidation has also been a part of the strategy.
During a May 9, 2025 visit to a detention center in Newark, New Jersey, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was placed under arrest. The charges were later dropped. But the same Trump appointed acting-U.S. Attorney in that jurisdiction decided to charge another Black elected official of “impeding law enforcement.” Three days ago, U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) was charges with an unheard set of violations over the same incident Mayor Baraka was involved in, that involving DHS or any other federal law enforcement.
The violence also occurs after a Trumpian ramp up of law enforcement and military, at the order of President Trump, in Los Angeles against protests against ICE and other federal law enforcements.
The targeted shooting of two Democrats and their spouses by an individual allegedly impersonating law enforcement also comes at a time when many are questioning whether alleged ICE immigration apprehensions are being undertaken by law enforcement.
Yesterday, Virginia’s Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin announced a similar policy in Virginia as President Trump has in Los Angeles regarding the National Guard vs. legal protests. On June 8, Trump ordered 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 U.S, Marines to Los Angeles after protests against ICE.
Thousands of anti-facists rallies are planned around the U.S. The NO KINGS DAY rallies are a pushback to Trump’s latest authoritarian actions.
“The Guard is already integrated into this,” Gov. Youngkin said on June 13 to pressers. “The way that Title 32 works for me is that I can involve the Guard in public disturbance efforts, so I’m already doing that. The Guard is going through last-minute preparations and we will have them pre-positioned, and many of them will already be involved in security events around the state,” Youngkin added.
The ramp up of political tension and confrontation by federal officials appears to be on the rise on the federal level under Trump. The ramp up is often mimicked by Republican Governors.
The assassination and attempted murder of a state lawmaker has shocked many in Virginia.
“The targeted shooting of two lawmakers and their spouses is horrifying and deeply disturbing. Let me be clear: political violence is never acceptable. Ever. We’ve got to turn the temperature down in this country. The rhetoric. The hate. The threats. It’s gone too far… I’m praying for strength and comfort for everyone impacted by this horrific and vile tragedy,” Virginia House Speaker Don Scott said in a statement this morning.
Virginia Senate Majority Leader Surovell issued the following statement on the assassination and the other murder attempts.
"I am horrified by the senseless acts of political violence that claimed the life of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and left State Senator John Hoffman and his wife fighting for their lives. These attacks strike at the heart of our democracy itself. None of us who run for public office sign up for this. We sign up to serve our communities, to debate policy, and to work on behalf of our constituents – not to have our lives and our families threatened by political extremists. Representative Hortman dedicated over two decades to public service, and her loss is felt by all who believe in the power of democracy. Political violence has no place in America,” wrote Senator Surovell.
Yesterday, as he commented on Gov. Youngkin’s similar policy as Trump regarding the National Guard, Surovell said there was no need to call in the National Guard in Virginia.
“He continues to try to use them to kiss up to President Trump as part of his own future presidential ambitions,” Leader Surovell said told The Richmond Times Dispatch.
“I call on the Capitol Police to assist in providing real solutions for increased security for members - and I expect full cooperation and resources from Republican leadership. Now is the time for real leadership - not more division, violence, and hate,” wrote U.S. House Homeland Security Chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS).
Whether Republicans will speak out as strongly against political violence as Democrats remains to be seen.

In a Political Battle for Who Controls Information, House Votes to Cut Millions from PBS and NPR
By Jennifer Shutt. The U.S. House narrowly passed legislation Thursday that would revoke $9.4 billion in previously approved funding for public media, including National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service, as well as foreign aid, though the bill’s future in the Senate amid a strict timeline is uncertain.
The 214-212 mostly party-line vote marks just the third time in several decades the House has approved a bill to claw back funding that lawmakers formerly agreed to spend. President Donald Trump sent the rescissions request that led to the House bill to the Republican-controlled Congress earlier this month.
Republican Reps. Mark Amodei of Nevada, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Nicole Malliotakis of New York and Mike Turner of Ohio voted against approving the bill along with all of the chamber’s Democrats. Read entire.
