VIRGINIA’S MOST DIVERSE STATEWIDE TICKET EVER. A historically diverse ticket that includes an openly gay Republican man, a Black male attorney from Norfolk, a Jamaican-born U.S. Marine vet, a Muslim woman born in India, a white woman who was a CIA officer and a Cuban-American Republican. Who knew that a southern state could give you such diversity?
Virginia’s 2025 Statewide Ticket is Set
The Republicans - The ticket is likely to have issues after LG nominee was attacked by operatives of Gov. Youngkin’s and asked to get off the ticket. That was then followed by Lt. Gov. Earle-Sears decidedly not appearing with Reid in public.
🔴 REPUBLICANS
GOVERNOR: Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears is the GOP nominee for Governor. So far her campaign has been a mystery “closed press” affair that has some in the party scratching their head. But her resume as a U.S. Marine veteran and sitting LG is featured in commercials running non-stop in Hampton Roads.
LT. GOVERNOR: Conservative WRVA radio talk show host John Reid is the GOP nominee for Lieutenant Governor. Reid had to fight his own party off after he was challenged by Youngkin to drop off the ticket. Instead, Reid stuck it out, threatened to sue and turned an April mini-scandal into a way to brand himself as an anti-establishment figure.
ATTORNEY GENERAL: The current sitting Attorney General, Jason Miyares, who won on the ticket with Gov. Glenn Youngkin in 2021, is running for re-election. Miyares defeated Democrat AG Mark Herring in 2021 as Terry McAuliffe lost to Youngkin.
The Democrats - Much like the 2017 election cycle that featured an anti-Trump blue wave sweep for the ticket of Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax and Mark Herring, team blue has a clear advantage with Trump back in office.
This morning Speaker Don Scott and Delegate Dan Helmer, who led the Democrats into victory and into the majority in 2023, announced an expanded battleground map.
🔵 DEMOCRATS
GOVERNOR: Former Congresswoman, and former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger spent her time in Congress branding as bipartisan and moderate. She appears to be extending that strategy into her race for Governor. In a May 9 interview with Vanity Fair, she stated that President Trump will not necessarily be a primary focus over issues such as the economy.
But in a year that features Trump’s authoritarianism on full display, many voters on the left are calling for fire and brimstone and they’re looking for someone who will bring the heat to the Trump Administration.
LT. GOVERNOR: State Senator Ghazala Hashmi defeated five other candidates in yesterday’s primary to become the LG nominee in stunning fashion. Hashmi, who is an attorney, has focused on progressive issues in the Virginia Senate and worked to protect health care. Her strength is that she will always be the adult in the room at a time of brazen lying and hollow politics theatrics.
ATTORNEY GENERAL: Former Delegate Jay Jones, 36, is the youngest member of either ticket. Jones’ resume includes service in the Virginia House of Delegates representing Norfolk and working as an Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia.
Black Press, Shoppers Turn Up Heat on Target
By Stacy Brown for Black Press USA. Target’s reputation and in-store traffic continue to spiral downward as new data reveals the toll of its decision to pull back on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. According to TheStreet, the Minneapolis-based retail chain has suffered four consecutive months of year-over-year foot traffic declines, including a 9% drop in February, followed by 6.5% in March, 3.3% in April, and 1.6% in May.
Placer.ai’s latest analytics confirm that Target is losing ground to competitors like Walmart and Costco, who have posted gains during the same period. The company’s retreat from DEI was confirmed in January when it ended anti-racism training, stopped promoting Black-owned businesses, and abandoned its participation in the Human Rights Campaign’s corporate equality survey. It also scrapped its internal DEI goals, sparking immediate backlash from civil rights groups, Black consumers, and Black-owned media.
“This has raised a red flag to Black America,” said Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). “We’ve not had direct communication with Target’s CEO, Brian Cornell, and we intend to intensify our efforts to get this issue resolved in the interest of 50 million African American consumers across the nation.” The NNPA launched a selective buying and public education campaign after Rev. Jamal Bryant’s “Target Fast” attracted nearly 200,000 supporters. The NAACP issued a consumer advisory citing Target’s broken promises on racial justice. The anger has not subsided. read entire here at Black Press USA
