Virginia College Tuition, Fees Among Highest in U.S.
A report by College Board Research released a report this week called Trends in College Pricing and Student Aid 2024. The report revealed that four year colleges in Virginia have some of the highest tuition numbers in the U.S. The chart below is from College Board Research’s report.
Rep. Scott Reacts to Trump Pick for Secretary of Education
With the announcement by Donald Trump that he wants to dismantle the Department of Education, his nomination of Linda McMahon surprised some. Why name a Secretary of Education if you’re going to be dismantling the department? McMahon is the wife of Vince McMahon, the billionaire wrestling promotor of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
“Vince and Linda McMahon have donated to various Republican Party causes, including $1 million in 2014 to federal candidates and political action committees, such as Karl Rove's American Crossroads and the research and tracking group America Rising. The McMahons have donated $5 million to Donald Trump's former charity, the Donald J. Trump Foundation,” according to wikipedia.
Congressman Bobby Scott, who is set to be the ranking member of the House Committee on Education & Workforce, commented.
“The vast majority of America’s students attend a public school. As such, the Secretary of Education has the enormous responsibility of ensuring all students have the opportunity to access a high-quality education that leads to a rewarding career. Ms. McMahon does not have a long history of work in education, so I will wait to pass judgement on her nomination until she has been fully vetted by the Senate,” Rep. Scott said in a Nov. 20, statement.
“However, I am staunchly opposed to President-elect Trump’s education agenda which seeks to abolish the Department of Education, eliminate funding for low-income and rural K-12 schools, scrap the expansion of school meals, and make it more difficult for student borrowers to repay their loans. If Ms. McMahon is indeed in support of this agenda and will work to actively dismantle the progress of the Biden-Harris Administration, I will not support her nomination,” he added.
Governor Youngkin Issues Executive Order on “Addictive” Social Media
Governor Glenn Youngkin today issued Executive Order 43, Empowering and Supporting Parents to Protect Their Children from Addictive Social Media & Establishment of the Reclaiming Childhood Task Force, to focus on mental health and “addictive” social media.
“Virginia and the nation’s children are facing a youth mental health crisis driven by the effects of unrestricted cell phone use and addictive social media platforms. The scope of this challenge is going to require all of us, private sector, non-profit organizations and government can support parents as they work to improve their children’s mental health,” said Governor Youngkin in a statement.
