Ghost Town: Norfolk Hearing on Veterans Confirms Low Staffing Levels at New North Battlefield Clinic

Two months after Trump Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins accused Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Bobby Scott of lying about staffing levels at the new North Battlefield Veterans Clinic in Scott’s district in Chesapeake, a Navy veterans confirms that what Kaine and Scott asserted was true.

The Trump Administration is in a public relations battle to avoid looking as if there have been cuts to veterans services. But in a field hearing yesterday in Norfolk hosted by House Democrats, veterans who offered testimony painted a different reality. Navy veteran Susan Hippen, who has been treated at the North Battlefield Veterans Clinic and attended the ribbon cutting ceremony that featured a speech by Sec. Collins, verified low staffing at North Battlefield.

Hippen is a retired U.S. Navy Master Chief who served on active-duty for 25 years.

Stories of long wait times to see physicians at the VA is old news. Hippen did make it clear that when she does actually see a doctor the service is very good. But the absence of a radiology team at North Battlefield is an issue that requires her to go to Hampton VA Medical Center for radiology related care.

“I went to the Chesapeake clinic just just to take a look after the ceremony. It was like a ghost town. It was very concerning to me. I go to see my doctor, who is now at the Chesapeake clinic. If he says, ‘Susan, I want you to get a scam for this. Susan, you know, I want you to get that X ray.’ I gotta go all the way up to Hampton. People are scared, they're concerned, and they're pissed off, very honestly,
