#VAB Events for Luria Feature Energy From Black Pols
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Last weekend local Democratic Party activists, leaders and operatives gathered for a canvass kickoff in Virginia Beach for Congresswoman Elaine Luria. Luria is going up against Republican State Senator Jen Kiggans in what is all but certain to be a very close and competitive race.
On the national level Democrats are worried that President Biden’s low approvals and inflation could spell big trouble for candidates like Luria. Like most Democrats in Virginia, Luria is going to need an enthusiastic Black vote to win. Luria's second quarter fundraising hit $1.8M, far outpacing Kiggans.
The Virginia Beach canvass kickoff on July 16 featured several Black Democrats who are candidates for office or veterans of several Virginia Beach campaigns, including Susan Hippen, Maurice Hawkins, Mike Feegans and Aaron Rouse. A second event on July 17 featured Alex Askew and many others in support of Luria.
The July 16 kickoff also featured U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. Hoyer made four stops in Virginia on Saturday. The week before featured several stops by U.S. House Whip Jim Clyburn. The visits signal the importance of Luria’s race to national Democrats trying to keep the majority in the House.
Currently they only have a four seat lead.
