Sunday Service: Rep. @BobbyScott at Shalom Baptist in #NewportNews
NEWPORT NEWS — This morning Congressman Bobby Scott visited Shalom Baptist Church in Newport News, and unlike most elected officials who visit churches, he stayed for the entire service — which is the Congressman’s consistent custom.
Service at Shalom began at 11 a.m. and the Congressman was warmly greeted by several ushers, churchgoers and Shalom’s Reverend Derrick Perkins.
Shalom Baptist Church was organized, as a New Testament Missionary Baptist Church, June 10, 1955, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Goode, in Newport News, Virginia, by the late Reverend Joseph Brackett Reid.
In keeping with the spirit of the church’s name, “Shalom Baptist Church” was suggested by Reverend Dr. Reid based on the principles preached by “Jesus who in His Sermon on The Mount.” In St. Matthew 5:19, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.”
Each Sunday, Shalom Baptist Church parishioners quoted, “Shalom (Peace), Shalom Aleichem (My Peace Be With You),” from 1955 to 1988.
