At a time when accurate news is particularly essential we wish to “plead our own cause” and begin to inform the Black community in Virginia. We believe this community is experiencing a news dessert in an era it can’t afford one. Our first post will focus on something fun: Seven Black owned businesses thriving in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This list is in no particular order.
The Lazy Bee Chicken & Waffles - https://www.eatlazybee.com. 616 North Main Street, Danville, Va. Deep in the heart of Danville is a breakfast you just can’t miss! It features chicken and waffles and so much more!
Harambee Books & Artworks - https://harambeebooks.org - 1132 Prince St, Alexandria, Va. Harambee is an independent bookstore in Old Town of Alexandria hosting a with a wide selection of best-selling books, exclusive artworks, and fashionable apparels. They also feature educational resources, reading programs, and host community-based events.
Ronnie’s BBQ - https://www.theoriginalronnies.com - 2097 New Market Road, Henrico, Va. Did you say BBQ? When Ronnie’s was located in a parking lot in Shockoe Bottom the lines were seen going around the block. Now cars are lined up at Ronnie’s in Henrico and it’s always worth the wait. Don’t pass on the BBQ chicken.
1865 Brewery - https://www.1865brewingcompany.com - 9 S Mallory Street, Hampton, Va. The 1865 Brewing Company is the first Black owned brewery in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Great for meetings and includes a full service coffee shop, brewery and nutritional juice bar with a non-alcoholic cocktail station.
Goodies Frozen Custard and Treats - http://www.mmmgoodies.com/ - 200 Commerce St, Alexandria, Va. Kicking it vintage and kicking it ‘ol skool Goodies Frozen Custard is a visual treat as well as a dietary one. The Alexandria location is retro and rock themed and a vintage ice cream truck is featured in the streets. You can’t beat it.
