RNC Amplifies Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears
If you want to see a political party celebrate their Black Lt. Governor it’s happening right now in Virginia. Republicans are celebrating and amplifying Winsome Sears.
From the RNC: On Tuesday, March 22nd RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel hosted over 150 guests for the annual RNC Black Republican Trailblazers reception in Arlington, Virginia. Â
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel presented Virginia Lt. Governor Winsome Earle Sears with the RNC Trailblazer Award, Indiana Republican Party Director of Diversity and Engagement Whitley Yates with the RNC Emerging Leader Award, and Woodson Center Founder and President Dr. Robert L. Woodson, Sr. with the RNC Legacy Award.
The RNC Trailblazer Award is presented to someone who displays an exceptional leadership background in the Republican Party. Whether it be working to advance conservative legislation, helping to get Republicans elected, or committing themselves to growing the Republican Party, Trailblazers have a track record of getting things done. Trailblazers must be nominated by one of the 168 Republican National Committee members, local party leadership, or Black Republican stakeholders.
Winsome Sears is the first woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the first Black woman elected to any statewide post in Virginia’s history. Lieutenant Governor Sears immigrated to the United States from Jamaica when she was six years old and would go on to serve in the United States Marine Corps. After her military service, she has served in many capacities at every level of state government. She was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2002 in a majority Black district, a first for any Republican in the commonwealth since 1865.
The RNC Emerging Leader Award is presented to individuals who demonstrate attributes in promoting Republican Party principles through being a leader in their organization, community, or state. This may include either running for office or running Republican campaigns, organizations, and issues.
