Portsmouth @MissyElliott Details, #HBCU Bands, Voting Info, 31 Days to #ElectionDay
PORTSMOUTH, VA — Standing outside Manon High School, Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover, along with School Board and City Council members, including Vernon Tillage (who is running for Portsmouth City Council), Tamara Shewmake, LaKeesha "Klu" Atkinson (who is running for Portsmouth City Council), Lisa Lucas-Burke and Christopher Woodard, announced the details for the Missy Elliott tributes.
OCTOBER 17 @ 3:30PM. The group announced the details this morning for the street renaming celebration and parade for the mega-producer and hip-hop star to take place on Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. near/at Manor High School.
Missy Elliot graduated from Manor H.S. (then Woodrow Wilson H.S.) in 1990.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has produced a long list of huge superstars, many of them musical artists, including Ella Fitzgerald (Newport News), Trey Songz (Petersburg), Allen Iverson (Hampton), Michael Vick (Newport News), Chris Brown (Tappahannock), Rob Lowe (Charlottesville), Pharrell Williams (Virginia Beach), Pearl Bailey (Newport News), Warren Beatty (Richmond), Timbaland (Norfolk), Ruth Brown (Portsmouth), Patsy Cline (Winchester), Trey Songz (Petersburg) and D’Angelo (Richmond), to name a few.
Missy Elliot is a prolific songwriter, producer and arranger and one of the top female hip-hop artist of all time. She is also a four-time Grammy Award Winner (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005). Additionally, Elliot has been a philanthropist in the local community, quietly giving thousands to local educational institutions and community organizations.
“Today we’re here to talk about a dream becoming a reality of someone who was a big dreamer,” said Erin Carter before introducing Mayor Glover.
The “Norfolk University, Hampton University, Manor H.S. Band, Churchland H.S. Band and I.C. Norcom H.S. Bands will participate in the parade. Governor Youngkin and Congressman Bobby Scott will both be present to present proclamations to honor Missy Elliot and her accomplishments,” Mayor Glover told media gathered near the front door of Manor Hight School.
