Phyllis Randall Opponent Drops Out, Justin Fairfax Sponsors Africa Trip, Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit, Gun Violence Victims Ignored? #MOW60
Phyllis Randall’s GOP Opponent Drops Out
Stephen Karbelk, the Republican candidate for chair of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors who was running against sitting Chair Phyllis Randall, has dropped out of the race.
"[F]or personal reasons related to the recent developments regarding the deteriorating health of my mother-in-law, I have decided that I cannot continue with the race. I need to support my wife and her family in South Carolina during this time of need," Karbelk said in a press release as reported yesterday by the Loudoun Times-Mirror. An independent candidate is now Randall’s only challenger.
Gun Violence Victims and the Reality After Tragedy
On May 31, 2019, in Virginia Beach, a disgruntled city employee named DeWayne Craddock murdered twelve of his colleagues and injured several others at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center, where he worked as an engineer in the city's public utilities department. Craddock had long been complained about by co-workers. The victims were all city employees, and the incident sent shockwaves through the community and the nation as a whole.
Now that the talking and the memorials and ceremonies are over, the family members of the victims have been appealing to the Governor and the Virginia General Assembly for support. The Virginia Beach massacre was the second deadliest mass shooting in Virginia after the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech.
A family member of one of the twelve victims, Sarah Gayle Leonard, contacted a number of Virginia lawmakers this week regarding assistance as budget talks continue in Richmond.

“On Friday we will begin our journey from Richmond to Angola as we travel as a team of ambassadors — beginning in Richmond and on to Hampton — to understand our history as it is connected to the Tucker family,” stated John Marshall High School Principal Monica Murray at a press conference yesterday.
The group traveling to Angola will first visit Hampton tomorrow and take part in the annual Tucker Family events. Virginia’s Tucker Family of Hampton are the ancestors of the first Africans to arrive in the United States in 1619.
