NORFOLK, VA — A prop plane with a voting message was seen overhead and several passing T-shirts read the phrase “Black Folks Must Vote” at the homecoming ceremonies at Norfolk State University. Also seen were many elected officials in office and on the ballot this year.
The weather was perfect and unseasonably warm for October. NSU’s Homecoming Parade was enjoyed by many during a route that was slightly changed the day before because of a natural gas line repair on Corprew Avenue. State Senator L. Louise Lucas was this year’s Grand Marshall of NSU’s homecoming parade.
After the parade, Norfolk State running back Kevon King led NSU (3-6) in victory over Howard University (3-5) by a score of 21-20.
Inexplicably, the homecoming parades and football games of Norfolk State University and Hampton University occurred at the exact same time this year on October 26. Both homecoming parades happened in the morning and both homecoming football games started at 2 p.m. Though NSU and Hampton are only 20 miles from each other across Chesapeake Bay, traffic entering both areas around the universities was challenging, and often standstill, all day long and parking was a predictably difficult proposition.
