Phillip Thompson: Third Generation U.S. Marine, U.S. Army and Loudoun Attorney on CNN
Loudoun attorney Phillip Thompson, whose father was a Montfort Point Marine, appeared on CNN this morning with anchor Victor Blackwell.
Thompson was interviewed on the Trump Administration’s anti-Black hostility as seen in several executive orders and various attempts to erase Black historic figures in the Oval Office (the disappearance of the MLK bust) and from official honors.
In early June, the Department of Defense announced a plan to rename the USNS Medgar Evers, christened for the World War II veteran and civil rights leader. The U.S, Navy announced the naming of the USNS Medgar Evers in October of 2009.
Below: Military Sealift Command’s dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE 13) departed Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, July 1, to begin its overseas deployment in support of U.S. Naval and allied forces operating in the U.S. Sixth Fleet’s area of responsibility.
Anti-diversity and erasing Black history at the Department of Defense as run by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been epidemic. From the removal of historic figures such as Jackie Robinson from the purging of books at military colleges, DoD has been on a crusade against Black history. Many of the decisions were reversed after outrage was heard.
On May 27, 2025 in The Washington Post, Thompson penned the column Uncle Sam’s new message to young Black Americans: I don’t want you. Below is the video from CNN this morning.
“As I look at today’s political environment — at President Donald Trump, his allies and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth — I’m forced to ask a question I never thought I’d have to pose: Should young Black Americans serve in a military led by people who seem openly hostile to them and the legacy of those who came before them,” Thompson asked in his Washington Post piece.
Phillip Thompson also wrote on this issue for Black Virginia News on March 9, 2025.

According to the Associated Press, a U.S. Army veteran, Marcos Leao, “detained” by the U.S. military in Los Angeles as he walked to an appointment. Because Leao was wearing headphones when as he crossed into an area being patrolled by U.S. military, reports indicate that Leao was the first individual detained by military as President Trump escalates the number of military personnel in the city.
Leao told reporters that he is a former Army combat engineer and was on his way to Veterans Affairs when U.S. Marines began to commanding him to stop. “Of course, I complied when I crossed the first checkpoint, and they told me to get on the ground,” Leao told Associated Press on June 13.
