World’s Fastest Man is From Alexandria, Virginia
There are over 8.1 billion people on the planet. The fastest man in the world is in Alexandria, Virginia. Noah Lyles, 27, graduated from T. C. Williams High School, which was renamed Alexandria City High School. Lyles turned pro in 2016 and won the 100m race yesterday at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a time of 9.79 in one of the closest 100m finals in Olympic history.
Missy Elliot Honored in Hampton
Portsmouth, Virginia’s Missy Elliot headlining her first tour. The groundbreaking Hip-Hop artist and producer launched her Out of This World The Experience tour stopped in the 757 at the Hampton Coliseum on August 2. The show featured music producer Timbaland, who is from Norfolk, and has collaborated with Elliott over her three decades of work. Missy Elliot also received special recognition from Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck, Virginia’s Speaker of the House Don Scott and Congressman Bobby Scott.
Manumission Tour Company at Black Biz Expo
The Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce hosted a number of Black businesses and community organizations in Crystal City in Arlington on Aug. 3 and 4.
The Manumission Tour Company was founded in the spring of 2016, by John Taylor Chapman, a fourth generation Alexandrian and member of Alexandria City Council The Manumission Tour Company seeks to bring attention to the historical legacy of Africans and African Americans in Alexandria through curating guided cultural heritage tours.
The tour company allows participants to experience “the rich history of African Americans in Alexandria as we visit historic sites that tell their story, including the Freedom House Museum, the Barrett Library, and the African American Heritage Park.”

LISTEN! THE RACE for MAYOR of RICHMOND on POD VIRGINIA. On August 1, Pod Virginia host Michael Pope featured an interview with former Richmond City Council member, candidate for Richmond Mayor and Richmond City Hall employee Jon Baliles. Baliles is the publisher and founder of the local news platform RVA 5x5 and has written extensively on Richmond’s corruption issues.
Baliles is also the son of Virginia’s 65th Governor and 34th Attorney General, Gerald Baliles.
The Richmond Crusade for Voters hosted the candidate forum and there will be two more forums on August 8 with Richmond City Council candidates and August 15 with Richmond School Board candidates. 🗳️ The forums will take place from 6pm to 8pm at Third Street Bethel AME Church at 61 North 3rd Street in Richmond. For the Mayor’s forum last night (Aug 1, 2024) questions were submitted by audience members via index cards.
