Newport News NAACP #BHM, McClellan Campaigns, Capt. Janet Days, Ida Wells, Bray School

The Newport News NAACP held a Black History Month Breakfast on Feb. 18. Over 100 guests enjoyed the ticketed event. Many elected officials were in attendance including Congressman Bobby Scott, Mayor Phil Jones, Newport News Vice Mayor Curtis D. Bethany, III, Newport News Commissioner of the Revenue Tiffany Boyle, Joni Ivey, Pastor Dr. William Maxwell, Hampton City Councilman Steve Brown, Hampton City Councilwoman Martha Mugler and Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew among others. The event was led by Newport News President Jennifer Brooks.

RICHMOND, VA — State Senator Jennifer McClellan made several stops in the Richmond in the final weekend of her campaign for Congress. The special election will be held tomorrow, Feb. 21 as she runs against Republican Richmond Pastor Leon Benjamin to fill the seat of Rep. Don McEachin.


NORFOLK, VA — Captain Janet Days made history this month when she became Naval Station Norfolk's 51st commanding officer and the first African American commanding officer in the 106-year history of the world's largest naval base. Captain Days taking the place of Captain David Dees.

WILLIAMSBURG, VA — The oldest building dedicated to the education of Black children, established in 1760, in the U.S. is located in Williamsburg, Va. The Williamsburg Bray School was moved from the campus of William & Marty to a location at the corner of Francis and Nassau Streets in Williamsburg.

IDA WELLS EVENT ON MARCH 1, 2023 with AUTHOR PAULA GIDDINGS. The Fairfax County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. has partnered with the National Council of Negro Women Northern Virginia Section for an event on the first day of Women's History Month 2023 — March 1. The 6 p.m. zoom event will feature author and Paula Giddings discussing her book Ida: A Sword Among Lions.

RICHMOND, VA — The John Marshall Justices defeated the St. Christoper Saints by a score of 100-58 on Feb. 15. As usual with a game at JMHS, there were many notable folks in attendance. More news and photos on that soon.
