Newport News Mayor Meets Biden, #Portsmouth Casino, New GA Chart, 100 Black Men Health Event
WASHINGTON, DC — On Jan. 20, the new Mayor of Newport News, Phillip Jones, met with President Biden at The White House with other Mayors on federal funding and other issues. Jones, 31, was sworn in to office on Jan. 10.
“Thank you to the Biden-Harris Administration for supporting Newport News in our pursuit to improve the lives of our citizens. It has been a long month for our community, but I am glad that Newport News has a seat at the table regarding the allocation of federal funds,” wrote Mayor Jones on social media after the meeting.
PORTSMOUTH, VA — The new Rivers Casino is set to have their grand opening on Monday, Jan. 23. On Saturday, Jan. 21 there was a test of the gaming machines. They also had a birthday celebration for State Senator L. Louise Lucas, who played a big role in establishing the Rivers Casino in Portsmouth.
After a flooding issue and a few scheduling changes, the second day of testing machines featured Mayor Shannon Glover, House Minority Leader Don Scott, and Senator Lucas placing the first sports bets. The new Rivers Casino is located at 3630 Victory Blvd, Portsmouth, Virginia 23701

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — One Hundred Black Men hosted a men’s health forum at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center in Newport News on Jan. 21.
Officials from Riverside Hospital presented various health care related presentations and took questions from audience members.
Also: 100 Black Men is celebrating 30 years.
