From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today visitors took a look at the new location for the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington, Va.

✂️ Today’s ribbon cutting brought out community leaders and business owners joined during that two hours to review many of the historic artifacts in the new location. The Black Heritage Museum of Arlington is a one of kind space in Northern Virginia.

Elected officials on-hand for today’s ribbon cutting included Congressman Don Beyer, State Senator Barbara Favola, Delegate Alfonso Lopez and Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti. Arlington NAACP President J.D. Spain was also present and spoke at the event.

Much of the history covers school segregation and massive resistance before and after the 1954 Brown v. Board decision and the history behind the predominantly Black sections of Arlington, Virginia.

ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETARY HISTORY. Although best known as a military burial ground, Arlington National Cemetery also has important connections to the history of slavery and emancipation in the era of the Civil War (1861-1865) and Reconstruction (1865-1877). This historic site includes the former location of Freedman’s Village, a community for previously enslaved people. From arlingtoncemetery.mil
