Wason Poll Has Harris Up 11 on Trump in Virginia
A week after a poll by VCU’s Wilder School showed that the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump could be tighter than anyone thought… The Wason Center for Civic Leadership at Christopher Newport University released its first 2024 election statewide survey on Oct. 7. The results at Wason are quite different than what VCU offered.
The Wason poll indicates that Democrat Kamala Harris holds an 11-point lead over Republican Donald Trump, with support at 52% to Trump's 41%. The poll also shows that incumbent U.S. Senator Tim Kaine leads Republican Hung Cao by 20 points: 55% to 35%.
Wason Center: Harris’ lead over Trump is built on an advantage among women (+20), Independents (+15), Black voters (+54) and college educated voters (+20); Trump receives support from Republican voters (94%), with a very narrow lead among white voters (48% to 47%).

New Book: “When Mayor Wilder Ruled Richmond”
Author Linwood Norman has written a new book on L. Douglas Wilder’s time as the Mayor of Richmond. Wilder recently wrote on his time as Mayor of Richmond at his platform WilderVisions. Wilder wrote on the “strong mayor” form of government in the city.
The book describes how Wilder’s leadership as “strong mayor” turned the status quo on its head and asserts that his time as Mayor, “represents a memorable chapter in Richmond’s rich political history that is still deliberated today.”
“When I led the City of Richmond referendum in 2004, it was strongly supported by the people, though opposed by the city council. In fact, the council refused to bring it up for a vote. I led a campaign to collect 15,000 signatures to bring it to council for passage.
I was prevailed upon by the people to run for mayor and received nearly 80% of the votes cast, carrying every district. In the last several elections, we’ve seen the percentage of votes cast for the Richmond mayor-elect plummet to dismal numbers. The percentage from all of the districts was 35.7% in 2016 and 37.7% in 2020,” Wilder added.
Wilder has been the subject of several books and wrote his own biography Son of Virginia, A Life in America's Political Arena (2015).
Study: Three Virginia Universities Have ‘Some’ Viability Risks
By Nathaniel Cline for Virginia Mercury: While none of Virginia’s colleges and universities are considered to be a “high” viability risk, three institutions — the University of Mary Washington, Virginia State University, and Radford University — are rated as having “some” risks that could threaten their ability to survive and operate, researchers announced on Monday in Richmond.
According to a study by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, which conducts analysis and provides oversight of state agencies on behalf of the General Assembly, each institution is “attempting to address its viability risks through various initiatives and efforts.” READ ENTIRE
