Students, Virginia NAACP, Sue Shenandoah County for Naming Public Schools After Defenders of Slavery
A lawsuit filed by students and the Virginia NAACP against the Shenandoah County School Board charges that Shenandoah has violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Educational Opportunity Act by reinstating the names of soldiers who fought to keep Black people as slaves in the U.S.
The NAACP Virginia State Conference and five Shenandoah County students filed a federal lawsuit alleging the Shenandoah County School Board is creating an unlawful and discriminatory educational environment for Black students.
The lawsuit was filed after Shenandoah County School Board voted to re-rename two public schools after confederate soldiers who fought in the Civil War to keep Blacks enslaved. Naming public schools after military leaders who fought for slavery was a common custom in the South with many of the re-naming honors and dedications occurring years after the Civil War.
