Lt. Governor Sears Files to Run for Governor in 2025

Virginia’s 42nd Lieutenant Governor, Winsome Earle Sears, will announce she will be running for Governor of Virginia in 2025 at an event in Virginia Beach tonight at 6pm. Sears filed the paperwork for the long awaited run for Governor today. Virginia bars its Governors from running back to back terms in office. Current Governor Glenn Youngkin will be required to leave office in January 2026 though he could run again in the future.

In 2022, GOP Lt. Gov. Sears took the gavel from Democratic Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax. Sears’ family experienced a major tragedy in 2012. Sears campaigning in 2023 in Suffolk, Va.

One of the issues sure to come up as she runs for Governor is whether or not she will try and win the support of former President Donald Trump. Lt. Governor Sears has been critical of Trump in interviews and has not endorsed him for President. The Lt. Governor was a no-show at the Trump rally in Chesapeake on June 28 when Trump stood alongside Gov. Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares who both echoed his MAGA policy agenda.
