As Virginia Lawmakers Move to Stop Legacy Admission in Virginia, Republicans Vote Against the Idea in Congress

On the night of Jan. 31, congressional Republicans who serve on the Committee on Education and the Workforce voted against putting an end to legacy admissions. An amendment offered by Democrats on the committee to a larger bill, H.R. 6951, the GOP’s (so-called) College Cost Reduction Act failed in a party line vote. All of the Republicans on the Committee voted against ending legacy admissions.

In Virginia, both Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate have passed bills to end legacy admissions at public colleges and universities in Virginia. Time will tell on whether or not Gov. Glenn Youngkin will sign legacy admissions into law.

Senator Yvonne Miller Remembered

On the first day of Black History Month, State Senate Yvonne Miller (1934-2012) was honored on the House and Senate floor of the Virginia General Assembly. Miller was the first African-American woman to serve in both the Virginia House and the Virginia Senate.
