Hanover NAACP Calls for Equity Officer After School District Uses Swastika-Like Logo #Virginia
HANOVER NAACP. The Hanover NAACP issued a statement today saying that it was “deeply troubled” by a new logo that Hanover Country Schools Professional Learning Programs used that resembles a Nazi swastika. The NAACP is also calling on the Hanover Superintendent, Michael Gill, to hire an equity and diversity director for the school system.
AUGUST 3RD APOLOGY. "We are deeply sorry for this mistake and for the emotions that the logo has evoked by its semblance to a swastika. We condemn anything associated with the Nazi regime in the strongest manner possible," Hanover County Public Schools Superintendent Michael Gill stated as posted on the school system’s website.
“One of our teachers designed the logo intending for it to represent four hands and arms grasping together – a symbol of unity for our all-county professional learning conference. Nothing more. While we are confident that the logo was created without any ill-intent, we understand that this has deeply upset members of our staff and community who see the logo as resembling a swastika,” Gill continued.
Gill also stated in his release that T-shirts with the logo on it will no longer be distributed and that the district is working to remove it from other printed materials.
