Speaker Don Scott on Roland Martin Unfiltered on Being Blocked from Speaking at First Colonial H.S.
During an interview with Roland Martin on March 28, Virginia House Speaker Don Scott revealed that the Virginia Beach Superintendent of Schools apologized to him for a March 26 incident involving First Colonial H.S. Speaker Scott indicated during the interview with Martin that the Superintendent, Dr. Donald Robertson, had nothing to do with the decision regarding blocking him from meeting and speaking with students at the school.
Speaker Scott was enroute to the school to speak with students about careers in the law when he received a call from his law partner Jeffrey Breit. The two are law partners at the Breit Biniazan law firm. Breit informed Speaker Scott he could not speak at the school because he had not been “vetted.” Breit spoke that day the First Colonial, Speaker Scott did not.
Speaker Scott, a prominent litigator in Virginia, has been in the Virginia House of Delegates since 2019 and is a top lawyer in Virginia.
In a statement issues on March 26, Eric Majette, President of the Virginia Beach NAACP, said the situation was outrageous.
“It is troubling that a leader of Delegate Scott’s stature was not afforded the same welcome that other public officials, such as the Governor or Attorney General,” Majette said.
“We are disappointed to see such a lack of support for a leader who embodies the progress we strive for in our community. It is essential that our schools not only acknowledge but actively engage with representatives of diverse backgrounds. Our students deserve access to a wide range of perspectives, particularly from those who have broken barriers in our state’s history,” he added.
