Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the first intercollegiate historically African American sorority. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University by a group of sixteen students led by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle.
Virginia NAACP 2024 Legislative Day Postponed Due to Snow
The Virginia NAACP has postponed their annual legislative day at the Capitol that was to take place on Tuesday, January 16 because snow is expected in the forecast in Northern Virginia.

Laurel Hill United Church of Christ hosted the Holland-Holy Neck Civil League’s annual MLK Day Memorial Breakfast this morning at 8 a.m.
Feeding 5,000 in Newport News at New Beech Grove
At New Beech Grove Baptist Church in Newport News on Jan. 14, Andrew Shannon’s Feeding 5,000 event drew hundreds of people. Shannon’s event aims to confront the issue of food insecurity.
Urban League Awards Gov. L. Douglas Wilder
This morning at the Virginia Beach Convention Center the Urban League hosted the 40th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Breakfast and honored Virginia’s 66th Governor, L. Douglas Wilder.
MLK Event in Prince William
This morning in Manassas at Colgan High School today the Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its 39th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Youth Oratorical Competition. Middle school and high school students from throughout the Prince William County spoke as part of the competition.
The Martin Luther King Community Choir was in attendance for the MLK Day celebration as were members of Congress and other dignitaries.
