Philip Hirschkop: Fairfax Dems Honor Loving v. Virginia Attorney

FAIRFAX, VA — Last night at their annual Blue Gala, Fairfax Democrats recognized attorney Philip Hirschkop.

Hirschkop, 88, along with attorney Bernard Cohen of the ACLU, represented Mildred and Richard Loving in several court cases to overturn the Lovings' conviction for being Black and white in Virginia and getting married.

The Loving case reached the U.S. Supreme Court, and Hirschkop and Cohen argued the case on April 10, 1967. The Supreme Court overturned the Virginia Supreme Court unanimously on June 12, 1967 in favor of the Lovings in the landmark Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia. In 2017, the Virginia General Assembly honored Hirschkop and Cohen. Cohen passed away on Oct. 12, 2020 in Fredericksburg. Cohen served as a member of the House of Delegates from 1980 to 1996.
