National Education Association Rally on Capitol Hill
Washington, DC — Even though three to four inches of snow hit the District of Columbia on Tuesday night, the National Education Association held a rally at the U.S Capitol to push back against Trump’s plan to close the Department of Education. Congressman Bobby Scott, the most senior Democrat on the House Education Committee & the Workforce Committee, was a featured speaker along with Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Fairfax Casino Bill Dies in Committee
By Nathaniel Cline for Virginia Mercury. A controversial bill to develop a casino and entertainment complex in Tysons Corner died today in committee after House leadership moved the bill between House committees for consideration.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell’s Senate Bill 982 would have added Fairfax County to the list of Virginia localities eligible to develop a casino that backers say would bring jobs and revenue for the county and commonwealth.
But after successfully passing the Senate with a 24-16 vote, the bill died in a House Appropriations subcommittee.
“We’re going to keep talking about it,” Surovell, D-Fairfax, said after Wednesday’s vote.
While it’s common for House leadership to move bills between committees, it comes a day after Del. Paul Krizek, D-Fairfax, was expected to take up the bill in the gaming subcommittee he chairs.
During a public event over the weekend in Alexandria, he said that he opposed the casino bill, sources confirmed with the Mercury. READ ENTIRE
In statement on Wednesday evening, Leader Surovell emphasized the threat of Trump’s policies that could mean job loss in Northern Virginia as one of the reasons establishing a casino in Fairfax is important.
“With the Trump administration moving aggressively to eliminate jobs in Northern Virginia, I am disappointed that the House Committee on Appropriations did not see fit to advance SB 982 to bring thousands of union jobs to Fairfax County.
With thousands of federal jobs already eliminated and the prospect of further damage to our local economy on the horizon, I look forward to continued work with my partners in the Fairfax Delegation to the General Assembly and our Board of Supervisors to bring forward policies that offer relief and support for our citizens,” the Senate Majority Leader pointed out in a statement.

On Thursday there will be a rally at the U.S. Senate to protest the nomination of Linda McMahon to be the Secretary of Department of Education. Trump is widely expected to try to end the Department by using his executive authority. Whether that’s legal is a pending question. REGISTER HERE.
