Richmond Casino Presser on August 31, 2023

EP21 - Richmond Casino Press Conference. On August 31, 2023, Urban One CEO Alfred Liggins III and Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen presented their case for a casino and resort in Richmond, Virginia. Last week, a judge cleared the way for a second referendum to appear in the ballot on November 7, 2023 for voters to consider for a second time. Though there may be more legal challenges ahead, early voting in Virginia begins in 21 days.

This episode of the Black Virginia News podcast is the Richmond casino press conference in full. In 2021, voters narrowly voted NO on a ballot question regarding a casino in Richmond. But Liggins and Carstanjen are making the case for a casino highlighting economic benefits to the community, including high quality jobs and money for education as they make a pointed effort to ensure community buy-in.
