Mayor Derrick Wood: A Virginia Mayor in Philly
VIRGINIA MAYOR AT PHILLY BIDEN-HARRIS BLACK OUTREACH RALLY. Was there anyone from Virginia in Philadelphia yesterday at the Biden-Harris campaign Black voters event? Why yes, there was! Dumfries, Virginia Mayor Derrick Wood took a drive up 95 North to be in attendance at a Black Voter Outreach Launch event in the city of brotherly love.
CAPTAIN OBVIOUS: President Biden will need Black voters to be, at the very lest, equally engaged as they were in 2020 to win. Black woman and Black man are the number one and number two voting blocks for the Democratic Party in terms of voter loyalty. But as broadcast journalist Roland Martin often says: The real competition may not be Donald Trump — it may be the couch.
There is a noted lack of energy around the Biden-Harris campaign many have commented on. The question is: Why? With so much at stake in the 2024 elections few have been able to answer the apathy question. But the grassroots sentiment that something is “off” as compared to four years ago is persistent.
“What is the message beyond a laundry list of accomplishments? If people aren’t feeling it in your lives, you can say it all day — it doesn’t penetrate,” former senior advisor to Vice President Harris and Speaker Nancy Pelosi Ashley Etienne is quoted in the New York Times yesterday as saying.
An analysis of the electoral map shows that the election is likely to come down to Wisconsin and Michigan — but campaign operatives on the right are pushing the notion that Virginia is “in play.” Perhaps this is a head fake by Virginia-connect Trump advisor Chris LaCivita. Or perhaps it’s real.
A poll released yesterday by Roanoke College indicated that Biden and Trump are tied in Virginia. The right-leaning ecosystem of media platforms are amplifying the notion that Virginia may be “in play.”
"Because Black Americans voted, Kamala and I are president and vice president of the United States. Because of you," President Biden told a crowd gathered at Girard College, a Black boarding school, in Philadelphia.
POLICY SUBSTANCE? Many in the grassroots are noting a drop-off in enthusiasm regarding Black voters as compared to four years ago. Polls are also indicating a drop off in support from young voters. Several polls conducted by Black pollsters are showing what may be an enthusiasm issue as compared to 2024.
What impact Trump’s criminal conviction will have on the race will take time to figure out.
This week in Philadelphia, President Biden and Vice President Harris clicked off the list of policy wins that greatly impact Black communities. They included student loan debt relief, capping insulin prices and “taking on big phRMA,” and removing medical debt from being considered in credit scoring.
The student loan debt forgiveness line as delivered by Vice President Harris yesterday received the loudest applause from the audience.
AG Miyares on Removing Restrictions on NCAA Athletes Who Transfer
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has released another statement regarding paying athletes some of the millions they make for colleges and universities. In a a May 31 press release he focuses on athletes who transfer schools for better NIL deals.
“The NCAA’s inconsistent and arbitrary enforcement of its transfer eligibility rule served as an illegal restraint on student-athletes’ ability to market their talent and control their education. I’m pleased that we could reach an agreement with the NCAA over its transfer eligibility rule. This agreement not only enhances the rights of student-athletes but also provides new opportunities for them to reach their full potential – both on and off the court,” said Attorney General Miyares.
The Attorney General’s statement added: “The NCAA’s transfer eligibility rule required athletes transferring between Division I schools to wait one year before competing in games unless they were granted a waiver. Although the NCAA exempted first-time transfers from this rule in 2021, the organization continued to enforce the rule for subsequent transfers without providing legitimate reasons for denying waivers.”
The agreement is subject to approval by U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey of the Northern District of West Virginia. Previously, Judge Bailey granted a preliminary injunction, preventing the NCAA from enforcing the transfer rule during the spring sports season. The proposed settlement announced today solidifies Judge Bailey’s decision in favor of the student-athletes.”
