A Battlefield Commander Sets the Marching Orders as Democrats Plan to Take Back Virginia
RICHMOND, VA — At a Juneteenth luncheon hosted by the Democratic Party of Virginia’s Black Caucus led by EJ Scott, Virginia House Speaker Don Scott set the vibe.

“This is the time to embrace the moment. You've been made for this moment,” he started.
“This is the opportunity that we have right now in Virginia. We have to run to this fight. we don't run from the fight. We don't wait for the fight to come to us. We need to run to the fight in this moment,” Speaker Scott said speaking at The Benedict on Cary restaurant in Shockoe Bottom.
The entire restaurant was full of Virginia’s top Democrats, local party leaders and operatives from around the Commonwealth.
“We don't wait for the fight to come to us,” the Speaker said. The event ended hours before the annual Blue Commonwealth Gala but set the tone for the day. The statewide races in Virginia will be the most watched in the country, alongside New Jersey, as both off-year elections are the first major signs of what the country thinks about the second term of President Donald Trump.
Trump has ordered thousands of layoffs of federal government employees, ignored the constitution and the authority of Congress and mandated the kidnappings and deportation of individuals with no due process using masked and armed men bearing no arrest warrants and shielding their identities.
Last night the statewide ticket the Democrats will bring to the fight includes three diverse candidates who will make history in one way or another if the ticket is able to sweep all three offices as they did in 2017 with Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax and Mark Herring. But the goal for them won’t be simply to make history but to alter the direction of it.

Jones Goes After Trump
“We are ready to stop Donald Trump and his relentless attacks on Virginians. Attacks that have been eagerly enabled by our Attorney General for the last four years,” Jay Jones said from the stage that featured a large American flag as a backdrop.
“Jason Miyares has put his own agenda before the people. He has bent this office to serve far right ideologues, put corporate interests and profits over people and Donald Trump's extreme agenda that is destroying Virginia's economy, devastating our workers, assailing democracy and the rule of law. He's all for that, too,” Jones concluded. He also gave a shoutout from the state to his opponent, Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor. Many operatives are talking out lout about Taylor running against Republican Rob Wittman in 2026.
Jones was followed by a brief speech by Speaker Scott who vowed Democrats would win big in November. Just as the annual gathering ended the news that President Trump was bombing Iran was reported. Several statements from elected officials in Congress noted that entering a war without congressional approval is unconstitutional.
“The President has attacked another nation without congressional authorization. There was no apparent imminent Iranian threat against the United States. Furthermore, the President’s own Director of National Intelligence testified before Congress earlier this year that the U.S. intelligence community assessed Iran was not building a nuclear weapon,” noted Rep. Bobby Scott in a statement on June 21.
Whether Trump will get involved in Virginia’s political contests, is an open question moving forward many in Virginia are wondering about.
