Election Eve: Downtown DC Near White House is Boarded Up
WASHINGTON DC — Businesses around The White House are boarded up as if a cat 5 hurricane is in the forecast. District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser has the National Guard on alert and streets near the White House feature tall black security gates. Yes, tight security is typical in Washington DC, but for an election eve?
In what is now becoming standard practice after the January 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, security is becoming more restrictive around big political events in the news. Pennsylvania Avenue is closed to pedestrian traffic as the platform for inauguration is built. But in addition to that, there is almost no line of sight to The White House from Lafayette Park.
DOJ to Monitor 6 Voting Locations in Virginia
On Nov. 1, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that the Department will monitor a number of voting locations around the U.S. on Election Day. Six of the locations are in Virginia. They are: Hanover, Henrico, Loudoun, and Prince William counties as well as the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park.
DOJ: “The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division will coordinate the effort. Monitors will include personnel from the Civil Rights Division, other department divisions, U.S. Attorney’s Offices and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management. Throughout Election Day, division personnel will maintain contact with state and local election officials.” DOJ RELEASE
600 Black Women Will Join VP Harris on a Historic Election Day Ballot
THE GRIO reports that Higher Heights has a a database that keeps track of Black women running for office. SEE HERE. “The 2024 #BlackWomenRun Database, a comprehensive and searchable resource featuring more than 600 Black women candidates running for office at the local, state, and federal levels in the 2024 election.”
In several states, such as Maryland, voters will be voting for a Black woman for President and U.S. Senate.
Higher Heights points out that, “for the first time, Black women are running for U.S. Senate seats in Delaware, Maryland, and Indiana—states that could see groundbreaking victories. In addition, Vice President Kamala Harris is making her bid for the presidency, further underscoring the impact Black women are having at the highest levels of government.”
Saturday Night Live Star Jay Pharoah
Former Saturday Night Live cast member Jay Pharoah appeared at an event in support of Sen. Tim Kaine, Congressman Bobby Scott and several other elected leaders in Chesapeake. Del. Cliff Hayes, Councilwoman Ella Ward and City Council candidate Pat King were also in attendance.
Pharoah was born and raised in Chesapeake, Virginia and graduated from Tidewater Community College and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Senators Warner and Rouse Kickoff a Canvass for Vindman
DUMFRIES, VA — Over the weekend U.S. Senator Mark Warner and State Senator Aaron Rouse participated in a canvas kick off for congressional candidate Eugene Vindman in Dumfries. Vindman is running in CD7 against Derrick Anderson.
