Early voting starts on September 22. ➡️ The attack ads in competitive seats have already started. Democrats in Virginia are working to win back the Virginia House, Republicans are working to take House control and flip the Virginia Senate. Either way, there will be a record number of African Americans in the Virginia General Assembly next year with a particularly historic spike in the Virginia Senate. The Virginia Senate is likely to have at least seven African Americans, the most the Senate has ever had after Reconstruction is five. Further, there’s an outside possibility of nine.
If Democrats win the majority in the House, Leader Don Scott would become the first Black Speaker of the Virginia House in history. This would follow the Democrats triumphant 2019 cycle that made Eileen Filler-Corn the first female Speaker in Virginia’s history.
