Virginia’s state government will be divided with a General Assembly controlled by Democrats and the Governor’s mansion controlled by Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin next year. The question becomes: What type of agenda items can actually become law over the next two years? On Nov. 11, Virginia Democrats in the House made it official with a vote on their new leadership.

“I cannot express enough how humbled I am to be named the next Speaker of the House by my colleagues. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the House Democratic Leader and I look forward to bringing that passion to the Speaker’s office. Virginia voters sent a resounding message on Tuesday that they wanted a Commonwealth that moved forward and that is exactly what I intend to do as your next Speaker,” said the incoming Speaker on Nov. 11, in a statement. Don Scott will officially be voted in as Speaker unanimously by acclamation in January 2024. Delegate Charniele Herring will be returning to the Legislature as Majority Leader.
