SCHOOLS RE-NAMED AFTER DEFENDERS of SLAVERY. After a Virginia school district made headlines around the world for rebranding two schools with Confederate leaders’ names, two rising seniors at one of the schools are leading community opposition to that decision.
The two said they were “disappointed” after the school system voted to rebrand schools with Confederate names on May 10, four years after the district stripped the names.
The students are now taking responsibility for representing a small population of Black students in a Virginia NAACP-backed lawsuit against their school board for allegedly “reaffirming discrimination” after voting to revert Mountain View High School back to Stonewall Jackson, and Honey Run Elementary School to Ashby-Lee after Confederate Gens. Corruption and Richmond City Hall: More Questionable Expenditures

In today’s edition, RTD writes that, Cameus Chicoye (who would appear to be based in Florida), a former business partner of, “Petula Burks, who resigned from her position as the city’s communications director on July 1, 2024 amid questions about her use of city funds,” has been the recipient of “2024 expenditures [that] bring the total spent by the city at Chicoye’s firms above $340,000 over the last 2 years.”

But RTD’s reporting by Samuel Parker is not alleging illegality as related to Cameus Chicoye or Petula Burks. But the story arrives in the wake of an endless serious of editorials and investigative stories using FOIA’d records on Richmond City Hall as run by current Mayor Levar Stoney. A spokesperson for Stoney, Richmond Chief Administrative Office Lincoln Saunders and Chicoye did not respond to comment according to the RTD.
