Black Caucus Members to Bring Family of Police Brutality Victims to #SoTU
Biden to Feature Police Brutality at State of the Union. The Grio’s White House Correspondent April Ryan is the first to report that several guests of members of the Congressional Black Caucus for President Biden’s State of the Union tonight at 9 p.m. are family members of police brutality victims. At bottom is a chart of many high profile cases over the years.
Many of the SoTU guests CBC members are giving their single guest ticket to are family members of victims of police brutality. Congressman Bobby Scott’s (D-VA) guest will be Wayne Lynch, the father of Donovon Lynch. Donovon Lynch, 25, was shot to death by Virginia Beach Police Officer Solomon Simmons on March 26, 2021 near the Virginia Beach waterfront. Donovon Lynch is related to superstar producer Pharrell Williams. The parents of Tyre Nichols and the brother of George Floyd will be the guests of CBC Chair Steven Horsford (D-NV) and Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX).

In June of 2021, Lynch sued the Virginia Beach Police Officer for $50 million. After several changes in counsel, which notably began with famed celebrity attorney Alex Spiro (Elon Musk, Jay-Z, Chance the Rapper and Naomi Osaka are just a few of Spiro’s clients), the Lynch estate hired former Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax as counsel in Oct. 2022. Fifty-four days later a settlement in the case was reached with the City of Virginia Beach for $3 million — the highest damage award for an officer-involved shooting in the city’s history. Weeks later, the docket in the case revealed that a non-licensed attorney advising Lynch was against signing the final agreement.
A court hearing in the Lynch case was then scheduled by Judge Arena Wright Allen for Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023 at Norfolk Federal Courthouse. Attorney Justin Fairfax, who is quickly becoming the Ben Crump of Virginia, also represents the mother of DeShayla Harris, 28, who was shot to death on the same night Donovon Lynch was killed. No one has confirmed, including the city of Virginia Beach, who killed Harris. DeShayla Harris has received less media attention than the Lynch case. Black Virginia News will continue to report on the details of her death and all of the unanswered questions that remain.
