Bagby Out, Morrissey Attacks "Backroom Deals," Runs TV Ad, Locke/Lucas Back McClellan
LAMONT OUT. 🏃🏾♂️Today Del. Lamont Bagby dropped out of the insane seven day race for Congress. The move comes a day after Team Bagby released a radio ad featuring Tyrone Nelson and Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney. Listen below:
Del. Bagby will continue to be a force in the House of Delegates and in the Black Caucus whether he in the House or runs for McClellan’s Senate seat should she win. Since Bagby has stepped aside for McClellan before it wouldn’t be surprising if she supports Bagby should her seat open.
SHORTEST RACE FOR CONGRESS IN VA HISTORY? 🏃🏾♂️Can anyone name a shorter race for Congress — nine days? Just days ago there was talk of six or seven candidates competing in an eight day race. But the establishment wing has arrived over the last two days in the run-up to the Friday/noon filing deadline.
TYRONE NELSON in 12/14 BAGBY AD… TODAY BACKS JEN. 🏃🏾♂️“Democrats, this is Tyrone Nelson. As we mourn Congressman McEachin, we continue his legacy by voting on Tuesday December the twentieth to fill his seat. My friend Delegate Lamont Bagby was mentored by Congressman McEachin. Together they fought for justice and equality—and criminal and environmental reforms. As a teacher and servant leader, Lamont ran a promise center that uplifts families who need it most.”
Despite the ad release yesterday, Bagby is now out of the race. The statement this morning:
FIGHTING JOE. State Senator Joe Morrissey is running an anti-establishment campaign against “the elites” of the Democratic Party. Most establishment Democrats in Virginia have problem with Morrissey’s pro-life position. Though there have been a few insurgent candidates that have made it to Congress (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush…). On the Republican side in Congress, several pro-impeachment anti-MAGA Republicans lost to Republicans backed by the “get in-line” Trumpist GOP (Joe Kent, John Gibbs).
He presented that at his announcement for Congress on Dec. 13 in Petersburg. Below:
MORRISSEY AT 4PM TODAY. 🏃🏾♂️ State Sen. Morrissey held a presser today (Dec. 15) at 4 p.m. to address the news of Del. Bagby leaving the seven day fast-dash congressional race for the fourth congressional district.
Morrissey re-stated to reporters his concerns about party maneuvering and the fast process for this Congressional election. His full statement from today is below.
MORRISSEY TV AD. Sen. Morrissey has a TV ad up focuses on gun violence that included President Biden. The ad is running in Richmond and can be seen below:

SCOTT + LUCAS ENDORSE McCLELLAN. As the party establishment makes it clear that they want to stop State Senator Joe Morrissey from being elected to Congress, other endorsements have arrived for McClellan.
Yesterday, it was State Senator Louise Lucas, Mamie Locke and Sen. Tim Kaine. Other endorsements are likely to follow. There should be no surprise that political parties don’t want a lot of choices for voters — rather, they want to select who wins. The political stories of Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders and other are classic examples on the national level.
Republicans are in a space where anyone can get nominated with enough money — because the party is uninterested in actual governing. Democrats still want safe, predictable and team oriented — traits needed in a party interesting in actual legislative action.
EVENT. 🏃🏾♂️ Tonight Urban League of Greater Richmond is hosted a #CD04 candidate meet and greet event at Urban Hang Suite tonight. Both Senators McClellan and Morrissey attended though the crowd was not large.
