At Alexandria Event, McClellan, Beyer, Don Scott Celebrate Black Candidates

A record number of Black candidates are on the ballot in 2023 for the Virginia Senate and the Virginia House of Delegates. On August 3, in Alexandria, Congressman Don Beyer, with special guests Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan and Virginia House Leader Don Scott, hosted a reception celebrating the excitement of this year’s history. This year also features a record number of women and a notable number of Generation Z candidates.

Congressman Beyer shouted out the first Black member of the Virginia House of Delegates after reconstruction, Dr. William Ferguson Reid, Sr., 98, who was elected in 1967. Beyer also mentioned the first Black Governor elected in U.S. history, L. Douglas Wilder, who Beyer served with as the 36th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1990-1994.

It rained but it didn’t matter. The event was held on the back patio of the historic 1799 Prime Steak & Seafood restaurant owned by Jay Quander that has an amazing history.
