👊🏽 WHEN: Friday, October 7, 2022. Press conference will begin promptly at 10:00 AM / WHERE: Manor High School, 1401 Elmhurst Ln, Portsmouth, VAThe Finney-Smith Foundation, Portsmouth Public Schools and the City of Portsmouth will host a press conference tomorrow, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m., to announce new details regarding the Missy Elliott Street Renaming Ceremony, which will be held Monday, Oct. 17. The press conference will take place at Manor High School (1401 Elmhurst Ln, Portsmouth, VA 23701).
Additional details will be announced regarding the activities that will take place in Elliott’s honor. Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover and Portsmouth School Board Chairman Dr. Cardell Patillo will be in attendance.
“We’re beyond proud of Missy’s accomplishments and so thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate her right here in her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia,” Mayor Glover said.
“Missy’s trailblazing career is a testament that when you dream big, anything is possible. We’re excited to celebrate her and rename this street in her honor.”
The Portsmouth City Council voted unanimously to rename the city’s current McLean Street to “Missy Elliott Boulevard.” The street serves the Victory Crossing Shopping Center, Tidewater Community College and the future Portsmouth Rivers Casino.
Melissa Arnette Elliot, better known as five-time Grammy-winning singer, rapper, songwriter and producer Missy Elliott, was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. She graduated from Manor High School in 1990. Missy Elliott is the first female rapper to be inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
