25 Photos: Rep. Bobby Scott Bash in Newport News Draws 250+
NEWPORT NEWS, VA — A May 27 celebration honoring three decades of work in Congress by Rep. Bobby Scott featured his colleagues and constituents around Hampton Roads. Over 250 people attended the event to celebrate the Congressman, who is currently the senior Democrat on the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee.
Speakers included Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander, State Senator Mamie Locke, House Democratic Leader Don Scott, Delegate Cia Price and Hampton Commission of Revenue Ross Mugler. Other attendees included Hampton Vice Mayor Jimmy Gray, State Senator Aaron Rouse, former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, Delegates Cliff Hayes, Jeion Ward, Jackie Glass and Angelia Williams Graves, Dr. Pat King, Gaylene Kanoytan and members of the Chesapeake Democratic Women and many others.
Mayor Alexander ran down all of the recent federal funding for the Hampton Roads region earmarked and announced by Congressman Scott over the last few months, totaling well in to the millions.
“We talk about how he delivers financially for this community but what’s most important is how he shows up for us. Bobby Scott in on the scene all of the time. You can count on him. You can set your watch on him. Because he will be there,” said Leader Don Scott.
Tina Turner’s Simply the Best was heard in the background as Rep. Scott was introduced in tribute to the Congressman and the legendary singer who passed away on May 24.
Senator Locke mentioned Scott’s famous “humility” noting his reluctance to toot his own horn. But any casual study of Scott’s work over the years reveals that the Congressman has passed more legislation and attended more bill signing across seven Presidents than any other member of the Virginia delegation.
