18 Days: #HerbJones Sleeper? Another Voter "Glitch", @HamptonU #Homecoming #Vote
There are 18 days until election day 2022 📣 National media is focused on close congressional midterm races that will decide who will control the U.S. House and Senate in the last two years of President Biden’s first term. meanwhile in Virginia, voting snafus keep popping up in the first year of Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin’s first year in office.
INCORRECT POLLING LOCATION INFO. “Unfortunately, @GlennYoungkin's Department of Elections sent out false voting information to over 13,000 voters in the Town of Herndon. If you received this letter, rest assured that you do not need to drive to the City of Fairfax in order to vote,” wrote the Fairfax Democrats yesterday. They also issued a press release.
This news arrives a week after finding out that there was a “computer glitch” involving 107,000 voters. The response from team Youngkin was to blame the Northam administration. But none of these problems happened when Northam was in office. Why now?
With so many Republicans across the U.S. claiming with no evidence that the 2020 presidential election were invalid or in some way fraudulent, and Luria challenger Jen Kiggans refusing to clearly say President Biden was legitimately elected, the above “snafus” in Virginia are particularly noteworthy.
In Virginia, City Council races and School Board races are on the same ballot together in this election cycle which has created a considerable amount of local political activity. That could make the results hard to predict.
As most Black Virginia News readers know, two of the most important races that will decide control of the U.S. House are taking place in Virginia.
They are in the 7th congressional district where incumbent Democrat Abigail Spanberger is competing in a new district against Republican challenger Yesli Vega and incumbent Democrat Elaine Luria’s race against Republican State Senator Jen Kiggans in Virginia’s 2nd congressional district.
🚩 But is Herb Jones vs. Republican incumbent Rob Wittman a sleeper?
👊🏽 IS HERB JONES A SLEEPER? The biggest share of early voter turnout last week and again this week was in the first congressional district where Herb Jones is challenging Rep. Wittman. Again: The biggest early vote share in Virginia is happening in the 1st congressional district (see VPAP circle graphic below). Early voters tend to be Democrats so this could be an advantage for Herb Jones. It’s noteworthy that the new first district includes Chesterfield and Henrico — two cities that propelled Spanberger into office.
🚩 Early vote in 2022 has already past the 2018 numbers, see above. Thanks Fergie Reid and David Poole for focusing on vital facts as election day nears.
Herb Jones, who was a Colonel in the Army, isn’t getting all the national media that Luria and Spanberger receive. Washington Post opinion writer Norm Leahy wrote about the 1st district race on Oct. 19 and he never mentioned Herb Jones’ name. That seemed intentional. But the fact is he has more than a shot to win.
Early voting has started. Election Day is in 18 days on November 8, 2022.
