UPCOMING EVENTS
BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA TO FEATURE THE LEGACY AND SOUL OF OUR COMMUNITY. The 3rd Annual Armstrong Walker Football Classic Legacy Project (AWFCLP) will kick off a six week long celebration with an exciting Exhibit at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, The Legacy and Soul of Our Community: 40 Years of the Armstrong Walker Classic.
The museum will host an opening reception on October 18thfrom 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibit will run through November 22nd and feature memorabilia and artifacts that will tell the history of one of the country’s greatest high school rivalries. Maggie L. Walker High School, Armstrong High School, and alumni loaned artifacts, photos, and films that span the 40 year history (1938 to 1978) of the classic football game. In visiting the exhibit you will experience the thrill and excitement that permeated throughout Richmond in November and on the Weekend after Thanksgiving when these two teams met.
The Armstrong Walker Football Classic broke attendance records with crowds upwards of 40,000 people at City Stadium. AWFCLP President, Greta Randolph stated, “As we continue to build on this legacy, the Armstrong Walker Football Classic Legacy Project team is excited to partner again with the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA) to be able to share these priceless pieces of our history.” One of the goals of AWFCLP and the BMHVA is to educate citizens and particularly area youth about African American history. Therefore Richmond Public School students will be provided with special opportunities to visit the museum. Support for this exhibit and project have been provided by the City of Richmond, Richmond Grand Resort and Casino, Virginia Credit Union and the Black History Museum of Virginia.
