11 Days to June 20 Primary: Filler-Corn Backs Hippen, Marine Jasmine Lipscomb, Jarris Taylor Kickoff, #Juneteenth @ElDeBarge #Virginia
➡️ HD96 — HIPPEN ENDORSED BY FILLER-CORN. Susan Hippen is endorsed by former Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn for the competitive House District 96 primary. 🏃🏾♂️ "I am proud to endorse my friend Susan Hippen for delegate,” the historic former Virginia House Speaker said in a statement. Hippen was endorsed by Del. Sam Rasoul on May 31.
“As a retired Navy Master Chief, she has demonstrated dedication to service and the determination necessary to accomplish the job. We need that same determination and dedication to protect a woman's right to choose, fully fund our public schools, and advocate for gun violence prevention," Filler-Corn concluded. Filler-Corn is widely expected to run for Governor of Virginia in 2025. She is a historic Virginia House Speaker as the first woman to hold the position and as the first Jewish Speaker. HD96 features one of the most competitive primaries of 2023 with Hippen leading in endorsements and fundraising against Del. Kelly Fowler, Navy veteran Brandon Hutchins and Air Force veteran and fighter pilot Sean Monteiro.
➡️ HD49 — JASMINE LIPSCOMB. The saga of Marine veteran Jasmine Lipscomb’s effort to get on the ballot as a Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates continues. Her campaign says she has close to 130 signatures and over $4,000 in her ActBlue after news that she was “blocked” from being on the ballot spread on social media.
In what would be a big win for Republican Danny Marshall, 71, who is set to face no competition in November, Democrats in Danville would appear to be determined not to run a candidate in House District 49 — a 40 percent Black district. The district is certainly red leaning (+6 Republican) and any Democrat running would have to run the perfect campaign with a stellar turnout game to win, but Danville ain’t Galax. In 2018, Tim Kaine won 48.9 percent and Republican Corey Stewart won 50.1 percent in the same precincts according to VPAP.
In a year when Democrats are focused on taking back control of the Virginia House after Gov. Glenn Youngkin won the mansion and the House in 2021 by focusing on rural Virginia. With over 93 percent support, Black women continue to be the number one voting block for Democratic candidates nationally and locally.

A review of emails and text messages indicate that local party officials communicated to Lipscomb that she did not submit her filing fee ($500) in time. Those emails and texts also indicate that Lipscomb has read the Democratic Party Plan thoroughly. The Marine veteran and paralegal is the only candidate who wants to get on the ballot to challenge Marshall.
Several Democrats who have talked with Black Virginia News say the party is making a mistake by not running a Black woman who is a Marine veteran in 40% Black Danville, Virginia. Local party officials are given a great deal of latitude as to their decisions on timing, dates, and call to caucus procedure.
Several Democrats and interested parties, many military veterans, have commented on Lipscomb’s situation on social media over the last several weeks.

➡️ LEADER SCOTT BACKS WILLIAMS GRAVES. “I’m honored to have the support of trusted Democratic leaders like Leader Don Scott. He’s spent his career being a champion for our Democratic values and I’ve enjoyed having him as a colleague. I look forward to continuing to work together in years to come,” said Del. Angelia Williams Graves, who is running in a primary against Norfolk City Councilwoman Andrea McClellan for Senate District 21. 🏃🏾♂️
➡️ HD86 TAYLOR VS. CORDOZA. The Democratic challenger for Republican Delegate A.C. Cordoza, Dr. Jarris Taylor, is kicking off his campaign this Sunday for the 86th House of Delegates seat. The district covers parts of Hampton, Yorktown and all of Poquoson. Taylor’s kickoff is Sunday, June 11, 2023 from 3pm – 5:30pm at 1865 Brewing Company at 9 S. Mallory Street in Hampton. Leader Don Scott and Delegates Jeion Ward and Marcia Price will attend.
➡️ JENNIFER CARROLL FOY will be on Network NOVA at noon today along with Andrea Bailey and others.
➡️ REP. BOBBY SCOTT met with Portsmouth small business leaders on June 5.
➡️ HD84. Nadarius Clark dropped an endorsement flyer recently in his primary race against House District 84 covers parts of Franklin, Suffolk, Windsor and goes all the way up to Benns Church.
