Trumpās Opposition Remains in Tailspin After Trump Win
Almost four weeks after former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, his opposition is still trying to unpack what happened and why they lost.
In a week Win With Black Women will continue their dialog. The groupās co-founder, Jotaka Eaddy, has already signalled strongly on social media that the strategy and direction and associate allies will change.
āI've already made clear that I'm not marching in a pink hat or blue bracelet- I personally don't think the March should happen- take the money that will be sunk in that march and redirect it into Black Womenās orgs doing work! -- these are my thoughts and not that of #WinWithBlackWomen - I don't speak for all Black Women- but many have told me they agree,ā Eaddy wrote on Nov. 15.
On the Native Land podcast featuring former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, Angela Rye and Tiffany Cross, Rye remained emotional about the outcome of the 2024 election.
āI think that I feel the obligation - I feel frustrated honestly with myself because I spent so much time on the half of the country that I despise,ā Rye said through tears on their Nov. 28 podcast.
Clinton 1992 campaign consultant James Carville, 80, has been featured in several interviews after the election offering different theories with great frustration. His main theory has centered around āwokeā politics being the cause of Harrisā loss.
Vice President Harris raised a record amount of money during an unexpected presidential campaign that lasted only 107 days, over $1.2 billion, as Trump and his Vice Presidential selection, Sen. J.D. Vance campaigned in opposition.
A key difference in the competing campaigns was clear: Trump and Vance campaigned directly to the base of the party. Vice President Harris pledged to ābe the President for everybody.ā She embraced a wider message that sought to appeal to swing voters and even some Republicans.
A central criticism of Harrisā campaign was that there was not enough focus on the base of the party and the events with Republicans and Liz Cheney were a long shot. Many in the Democratic party have argued for years that attempting to convert voters on the right to support Democrats is a losing and expensive proposition.
Stacy Abrams, a former Georgia State Representative from 2007 to 2017 who ran for Governor of Georgia in 2018 and again in 2022, subscribed to that theory of grass roots focused campaigning. Though Georgia has not elected a Democrat for Governor since 1998, President Joe Biden and Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are examples of Democrats who have recently won the state.
In 2019, Abrams leaned into āidentity politicsā that is now being criticized by many Democrats as a core reason Democrats lost The White House this year.
āThe marginalized did not create identity politics,ā Abrams wrote in 2019.
āTheir identities have been forced on them by dominant groups, and politics is the most effective method of revoltā¦ the result of marginalized groups finally overcoming centuries-long efforts to erase them from the American polity ā activism that will strengthen democratic rule, not threaten it,ā Abrams added.
During the podcast Pod Save America with former aides of President Barack Obama, Harrisā campaign consultants, who were mostly President Bidenās team, spoke about why they lost.
Harris campaign adviser David Plouffe along with Stephanie Cutter, Quentin Fulks and campaign manager Jen OāMalley Dillon shared their thoughts of where the campaign went wrong with not much discussion of mistakes they may have made along the way.
What wasnāt shared in depth is what the Democratic Party will do differently moving forward. In less than two months Donald Trump begins his second term in office four years after his supporters violently attacked the U.S. Capitol to stop the certification of President Bidenās election.
What will the plan be to slow the forward momentum of MAGA Republicanism down moving forward? Who will lead the charge against them as Biden leaves the stage.
