HAMPTON, VA β FORMAL ATTIRE AND SNEAKERS? NO π YES π LOVE IT. β The 40th Annual Sneak Ball took place at the Hampton Roads Convention Center on Aug. 27. Guests clamored around Boo Williams in the main lobby of the convention center as they made their way to dinner upstairs.
Formal attire always has that fortunate twist at the sneaker ball: The dress code of the evening should be mandated for every gala eventβ formal wear and sneakers.
π The Boo Williams Summer League is a non-profit athletic organization that gives young athletes a place to display basketball skills and emphasizes education and teamwork. Phoebus High School basketball star Marcellus Spencer βBooβ Williams, Jr. created the summer league in 1982 with only $400 and less than 50 players. It has since blown up.
The league now has over 200 teams and more than 2,000 male and female players. The youth sports facility for Hampton opened in 2008 as a Sportsplex of over 135,000 square feet and a 4,000-seat venue which has eight basketball courts and an indoor running ππΎββοΈ track.
π The PR materials for the Boo Williams sportsplex reads that, βthe program also has the privilege of uniting culturally diverse groups with the common goal of competing, learning and socializing.β
The socializing at the gala could have been a model. Attended were Congressman Bobby Scott, Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck, Hampton Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Smith, Hampton Vice Mayor Jimmy Gray, several Hampton City Council members including Steve Brown and many others.
