Juneteenth
Juneteenth marks the day ~ June 19, 1865 ~ when the last group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free.
Two and a half years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. Two and a half years that they remained in bondage, working, suffering, surviving ~ because the people who held them chose not to tell them they were free!
So while Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, it’s also a stark reminder of just how tightly this country clung to slavery. Freedom wasn’t given, it was withheld.
That’s what makes Juneteenth powerful. It’s a story of delayed justice, but also of unshakable resilience. It speaks to the strength of our ancestors and the depth of cruelty they endured. It reveals both the resistance to our liberation and the fire that refused to be extinguished.
Juneteenth Flag Raised Over Arlington County
A message from JD Spain, Sr., member of the Arlington County Board: I’m proud to share that, after my deliberate engagement and advocacy, I requested—and for the first time in our history, the Juneteenth Flag has been officially raised over Arlington County, Virginia.
Location: Ellen Bozman Government Center, 2100 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington
The flag was raised this evening and will fly proudly for at least the next two days in honor of Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrating Black freedom, resilience, and achievement. This moment marks a meaningful step in recognizing our shared history and continuing the work of equity and inclusion in our community. Let us reflect, celebrate, and keep pushing forward.
